May 28: Arrived in Israel

We landed safely in Tel Aviv. The hard part was the drive from the airport to the hotel.

We waited over 40 minutes for a van large enough to take all 5 of us from the airport. The other drivers kept saying we should wait, rather than take 2 taxis. "Saba is coming", they said. They seemed unwilling to risk angering Saba by letting us give up and leave early.

Saba, when he arrived, was a piece of work. He had an unlit cigarette hanging from his mouth. He was constantly doing something other than driving - typing a phone number into his cell, pouring water into a glass, cleaning his glasses, reading a number off a faded piece of paper and copying it onto another piece of paper. They say the roads are the most dangerous place in Israel -- I began to fear I would never get my family to Tel Aviv.

But we arrived in one piece. We have 2 rooms side-by-side on the 12th floor, of the Sheraton, facing the ocean with balconies. The beds are small (twins) but there is one for each of us - even Josh has his own little mattress on a trundle.

Sheraton Tel Aviv - we stayed in room facing the sea

We ate dinner at a beach-side restaurant across the street called The London. The food was good, plentiful and not too expensive. They have an extensive menu with something for everyone. The weather outside at night is delightful - warm, but not uncomfortable.

There is a lovely breeze in our room, and we can hear the sea rolling in below.
