lunching in Montelcino |
Montelcino, hike near Bagno Vinoni, Montelpuciano, Pienza
the day:
long dirt road
Montelcino- sandwiches at the top, pizza, walked inside little fort, at on bench at fort
drove to Bagno Vinoni
hiked up to top on trail toward San Quirico d'Orcia. via Francigena
http://www.parcodellavaldorcia.com/en/itinerari.asp - didn't do the full loop we intended. too hot, not enough water. too late in the day
hiked back
drove to Montelpuciano- walked up to the top. Ted and boys sat on church steps. Almost bought art glass by Massimo Cruciani. Gelato. parked badly
drove to Pienza - the restaurant with the terrace closed. So we ate at Buca dell Fate. school concert in the piazza - kind of dreadful
drove home in the dark, which was stressful
never saw the big oak tree. Something for next time.
Sunflowers along the road. They are called "girasoles" in Italian |
typically gorgeous Tuscan driveway. Napa and Sonoma feel like pretenders after Tuscany |
I just love how well all the colors go together in Italy |
Goofing around in Montelcino |
Montelcino |
zoom in to read bottom paragraph in English, about good governance and beauty of Val d'Orica |
We walked a bit of the via Francigena that day |
This area actually has planned trails, which was rare |
We had originally planned to do the whole red loop. But driving on the dirt road took so long, that we cut it short and did a there and back on part of it. |
Val d'Orcia has a large number of hikes. The via Francigena is usually a dirt road, but here it was a lovely trail |
trail passed wineries, that also grew olive trees |
castle at the top of the hill had a water fountain |
